Job Description

GovCIO is hiring a Cyber Analyst to support the Department of Veterans Affairs. This fully remote role focuses on monitoring and maintaining firewalls, detecting abnormal network behavior, and strengthening cybersecurity compliance. The analyst will manage vulnerability findings and coordinate system assessments and audits. They will also work within the NIST Risk Management Framework to support federal security efforts

Moreover, key tasks include maintaining POAs, submitting security packages via eMASS, and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for user access controls. This role requires a strong understanding of federal cybersecurity practices and hands-on technical skills. The position offers full-time work during normal business hours.

Responsibilities of the Cyber Analyst

The following are the responsibilities of the Cyber Analyst at GovCIO:

  • Apply the NIST Risk Management Framework to strengthen cybersecurity for federal agencies.
  • Monitor and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other network defense technologies.
  • Detect and report abnormal network behavior and potential threats in real-time.
  • Coordinate and reconcile findings from system assessments, audits, and vulnerability scans.
  • Develop and submit maintenance security packages using eMASS in compliance with federal standards.
  • Resubmit and validate security controls on an annual basis via eMASS.
  • Prepare and maintain a Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms) for each Authority to Operate (ATO) package.
  • Track and update the status of monthly vulnerability scans for each ATO.
  • Create and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for user account provisioning and end-user security controls.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure proper implementation of security protocols.

Requirements for the Cyber Analyst

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or Information Technology
  • A total of 12+ years of relevant experience
  • Equivalent experience may be accepted in place of formal education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Assessment and Authorization (A&A) process
  • Experience with ATO package development and its alignment with the Risk Management Framework
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and project management tools
  • Understanding of firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems

Experience

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in cybersecurity or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated history of working in federal cybersecurity compliance and risk management

Skills for the Cyber Analyst

  • Strong ability to conduct and interpret vulnerability scans
  • Proficiency with eMASS, POA&Ms, and security control validation
  • Skilled in writing SOPs and handling user access provisioning
  • Clear communication and collaboration across technical teams
  • Ability to analyze threats and suggest effective mitigation steps

Certificates

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or suitability clearance

Shifts for the Cyber Analyst
