Job Description

The Controls Technician for Colgate-Palmolive’s Topeka Manufacturing Facility will be responsible for providing on-shift support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical and control systems. This includes working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and other plant-floor electrical systems. The role also involves training maintenance and operations personnel on electrical systems and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities of Controls Technician

  • Maintain and Troubleshoot PLCs: Handle maintenance and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including Allen Bradley ControlLogix, GuardLogix, and Wonderware-based Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) or Panelview.
  • Electrical and Control System Maintenance: Support and repair electrical and control systems, including vision systems, industrial robots, pneumatics, valves, motors, loop controllers, control system I/O, and instrumentation systems like flow meters, load cells, and photo-electrics.
  • Technical Support for Operations: Serve as a technical resource for troubleshooting plant operations, maintenance, and engineering, which may require climbing, bending, and crawling.
  • Employee Training: Conduct training on controls and electrical systems for maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Documentation and Backup: Maintain detailed records of changes made to software and hardware systems, including electrical and process prints. Follow backup procedures for controllers, panels, and programmable switches.
  • Problem Reporting: Provide detailed reporting on issues encountered and actions taken.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure adherence to safety standards as outlined in the Hill’s Safety Policy.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma is required for this position.
  • Candidates with 5 years of plant technical experience OR 3 years of plant technical experience plus a 2-year technical degree are eligible to apply.

Experience:

  • Plant Technical Experience: At least 5 years of hands-on technical experience working in a plant environment, troubleshooting, maintaining, and programming control systems.
  • PLC and Safety PLCs: Expertise in troubleshooting and programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Safety PLCs using ladder logic programming, including sequencer programming and AOI (Add-On Instructions) blocks.
  • Electrical Circuits: Strong experience in troubleshooting 3-phase 480 VAC, 120 VAC, 24 VAC, and VDC control circuits.

Skills:

  • Electrical Schematics: Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics to support effective troubleshooting and system maintenance.
  • NEC Regulatory Knowledge: Ability to understand and interpret National Electrical Code (NEC) regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance during all operations.
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues related to plant floor electrical, control, and pneumatic systems, including vision systems, motors, valves, sensors, and more.
  • Shift Flexibility: Must be available to work different shifts and weekends, as the position may require availability outside of regular business hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wonderware/AVEVA System Platform: Experience in troubleshooting systems built on Wonderware/AVEVA System Platform for improved control and monitoring in the plant environment.
  • Microsoft SQL Databases: Familiarity with Microsoft SQL databases, enabling data management and retrieval for plant operations and system analysis.
  • Cisco Architecture and Infrastructure: Basic understanding of Cisco LAN concepts and infrastructure to support network connectivity and device integration in plant control systems.
  • CAD Drawings: Ability to create or modify CAD drawings, which assist in visualizing and implementing electrical and control system designs effectively.

Shift 

The Controls Technician position at Colgate-Palmolive’s Topeka facility operates on a 2nd shift schedule, typically from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with overtime opportunities available.
