Job Description

The Assistant Nutrition role involves processing diet orders and communicating with patients or healthcare staff to ensure meals align with prescribed dietary needs. The position includes identifying specific needs such as food allergies, cultural preferences, and therapeutic requirements. Duties also include rounding on patients for meal choices, assisting with menu prep, calculating food production sheets, and maintaining records for management oversight. The job supports both hot and cold meal prep and helps ensure patients’ dietary satisfaction and safety within the healthcare setting.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Nutrition

  • Process diet orders and confirm they meet dietary prescriptions.
  • Communicate with patients or healthcare staff to clarify and verify nutrition needs.
  • Identify and document special dietary requirements (e.g., allergies, cultural preferences).
  • Conduct patient care rounds to collect meal preferences.
  • Assist patients in selecting menu items.
  • Prepare production sheets for hot/cold meals and specialty items.
  • Maintain detailed records for supervisor or manager use.

Requirements

Qualifications: 

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: 

No previous experience required, but three to six months of on-the-job training is necessary.

Skills:

  • Ability to solve problems using basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
  • Familiarity with automated diet office system data entry and adjustments.
  • Proficiency in using a computer and data entry.
  • Analytical skills to review data from the hospital’s system.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting objects weighing up to 11 to 20 pounds
  • Standing for more than two hours at a time
  • Stooping or bending
  • Manual dexterity, reach and grasp objects
  • Ability to hear and communicate orally
  • Pushing or pulling supply carts
  • Proofreading and checking documents for accuracy
  • Using a keyboard to enter and transcribe words or data

Shifts

This position is per diem, offering flexible shifts. Work hours will depend on the facility’s needs, providing flexibility in scheduling.
