Internship Description
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is offering a full-time Civil Engineer Intern opportunity within its Roadway Repair and Maintenance (RRM) Contract Management team. This unit plays a vital role in managing milling contracts critical to the city’s resurfacing efforts.
The selected intern will gain hands-on experience in contract lifecycle management, field data validation, database operations (MCMU), cost estimation, and interagency collaboration. This role is best suited for civil engineering graduates passionate about public service, infrastructure development, and gaining exposure to real-world contract and data management.
This is a competitive civil service position requiring permanent appointment in the title of Civil Engineering Intern.
Responsibilities of the Civil Engineer Intern
The following are the responsibilities of the Civil Engineer Intern at the NYC Department of Transportation:
- Manage and maintain milling contract records from start to close-out.
- Develop contract design specifications and cost estimates.
- Support the procurement process by coordinating with the Agency Chief Contracting Office (ACCO).
- Enter and validate field data into the MCMU Access database.
- Ensure the integrity and consistency of data across records.
- Train fellow team members on MCMU database usage.
- Review and process contractor requisitions and invoices.
- Estimate costs and compile average daily mileage reports.
- Prepare detailed financial summaries to guide operational decisions.
- Collaborate with other DOT units and city agencies on related projects.
- Assist with budgeting and contract task order development.
- Verify and organize field data before final database submission.
Requirements for the Civil Engineer Intern
Given below are the qualifications, experience, and skills required for the Civil Engineer Intern at NYC DOT:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Note: Degrees in other engineering disciplines or civil engineering technology are not accepted.
Experience:
- This is an entry-level internship.
- Must already be permanently serving in the Civil Engineer Intern title under NYC civil service guidelines.
Skills:
- Accuracy and attention to detail in entering and organizing data.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Access or similar database software.
- Understanding of contract requisitions and invoice processing.
- Ability to perform basic cost estimates and manage financial data.
- Capable of generating and interpreting simple financial reports.
